Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber could return to the pitch before the end of the season.

Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber is set to face months on the sidelines with an anterior cruciate ligament injury after being taken out of the match against Nottingham Forest on the opening day of the Premier League season.

However there was some good news amongst the bad as the scans showed that Jurrien Timber suffered no significant damage to his meniscus. The only damage is to his ACL which usually means a recovery time of six to eight months. If there was damage to his meniscus as well that would mean he’d be sidelined for close to 12 months.

Ben Jacobs told Caught Offside that the defender could be back around late March meaning he could play again this season. Ben Jacobs: “Arsenal have not yet revealed how long the defender will be out for, sources indicate he’s unlikely to be back before late March.”

If Mikel Arteta can have him available for the last few months of the season, it would be a huge boost, especially if the club find themselves in a similar position as last season where they’re fighting Manchester City for the Premier League title.

Timber made a dream transfer from Ajax to Arsenal this summer, which paid a maximum of £40million for him. The defender got off to a great start to the season in London, winning the Community Shield against Manchester City on penalties with Arsenal. Timber, who received a lot of praise for his performance, immediately won his first prize.

The Gunners do have options to cover for Timber, whose acquisition was designed to strengthen Arteta’s depth across the defensive line, however the club could dip back into the market over the next three weeks to cover for the Dutch international’s injury.

At left back, the position where the former Ajax defender started against Forest, they can call upon the returning Oleksandr Zinchenko, Jakub Kiwior and Takehiro Tomiyasu, who can fill in on the opposite flank too.
