Ian Wright thinks Declan Rice has been going under the radar for his performances, but his winning goal during Arsenal’s 3-1 win over Manchester United has now highlighted what he is producing.

Arsenal’s club-record signing scored his first goal at his new club on Sunday in the most dramatic of fashions when his shot from inside the box deflected off Jonny Evans and trickled underneath the despairing dive of Andre Onana.

Given that Declan Rice was able to put his name up in lights with that winner in stoppage-time, Wright thinks it now highlights what he did throughout the 90 minutes from his ‘progressive passes’ to his ‘interceptions’, as he told Premier League Productions (04/09/23 at 2:10 pm).

But previously, the Highbury legend suggested that it has all been going under the radar because ‘people just think he has gone about his business’.

There has been a lot of hype and noise around Rice’s arrival this summer, so you would think that comes with that player being recognised by the fans and the media – Michael Owen says one other summer signing, Kai Havertz, did something he has never see a professional footballer do.

But Wright clearly feels that hasn’t been happening with Rice, as the 24-year-old helps Mikel Arteta’s side maintain their unbeaten start to the new Premier League season heading into the international break.

“If he doesn’t score the goal, then people just think that he has just gone about his business,” said Wright. “But he has scored the goal and it has highlighted what he has done.

“Progressive passes. Everything he did. Interceptions. All the stuff that he does, which goes by the wayside because of how great he is.

“Adding the goals into that now and getting himself into a situation where he can get the goals is making people understand just how good he is and what he is capable of doing.

“In that game especially, you do need that player to step up and make the difference. He did, in the end.”

Rice stands tall

This is a huge moment for the England international and a small signal to all that he belongs at this Premier League title level.

Of course, Arsenal still haven’t won the title under this manager or crop of players.

But this is where the likes of Rice continue to rise and try to push the team over that dotted line after shooting themselves in the foot last season.
