Arsenal already have perfect Gabriel Magalhaes replacement and Kai Havertz has proved it

Arsenal news as Mikel Arteta may be forced to replace Gabriel Magalhaes in defence after his injury scare for Brazil against Bolivia during the international break

Arsenal’s frustrations with the international break would have worsened this month following the injury to Gabriel Magalhaes. The 25-year-old was spotted with ice on his right thigh after being substituted in the 85th minute in Brazil’s 5-1 win over Bolivia.

The game was Gabriel’s national team debut and the Gunners defender produced another fine display at the centre of the South American’s defence.

The defender was on the receiving of a horror challenge when Diego Ibanez struck the Gunners star in his chest early in the game, although he played on up until the 85th minute.

He was replaced by Roger Ibanez and was spotted having ice applied to his right thigh. It’s unclear whether the problem was sustained through contact or an unfortunate muscle pull.

Physical therapy doctor, Dr. Rajpal Brar, did provide a brief update on his initial assessment of the injury. On Twitter, he wrote: “Thigh issue for Arsenal CB Gabriel Magalhaes – unsure if it’s contact related or a muscle pull

Brar later provided another update: “Based on what multiple people have told me, sounds contact related. Overall good news.”

Fears over Gabriel’s fitness back in England would have been on red-alert this weekend after his return to Mikel Arteta’s squad before the international break. Thomas Partey’s groin injury saw Gabriel start his first game of the season having been benched in the first four games of the season.

Arsenal will be hoping to welcome the former Lille man back to London Colney for next weekend’s trip to Everton without any serious concerns. Should he be forced to miss the return of the Premier League, Arteta will have to reconsider his complex backline.

Oleksandr Zinchenko’s return to fitness makes the predicament slightly easier with the Ukrainian expected to start at left-back. Gabriel’s absence will leave a vacant gap at centre-back alongside William Saliba and Takehiro Tomiyasu could be the perfect solution.

The defender, naturally a right-back, has started one game for the Gunners so far this season. His controversial red card against Crystal Palace in the second game of the season saw him miss the draw with Fulham, although a run of fixtures could now be presented.

Tomiyasu played the full 90 minutes of Japan’s impressive 4-1 away win at Germany, playing at left centre-back. The 24-year-old has never played in that position for Arsenal, although his performance in Wolfsburg has impressed many.

The Japan international made six clearances, three interceptions and completed 86% of his passes (via SofaScore). Fans would have also seen videos of the defender defending brilliantly against Bayern Munich’s Leroy Sane on two separate occasions.
