‘ANNOYS ME’: IAN WRIGHT SLAMS ACTIONS OF ARSENAL 24-YEAR-OLD AGAINST EVERTON TODAY

Ian Wright wasn’t happy with Eddie Nketiah for not being able to do the basics by staying onside during Arsenal’s 1-0 win against Everton on Sunday at Goodison Park.

In the first half, after a brilliant pass from Fabio Vieira, he put Gabriel Martinelli through on goal, and like Thierry Henry in his prime, the Brazil star slotted home to open the scoring for Arsenal, or so he thought.

But VAR deemed that Eddie Nketiah was offside in the build-up and the goal was ruled out, with Wright making it clear that the correct call was made, as he told Premier League Productions (17/09/23 at 5:25 pm).

The Highbury legend wasn’t happy with Eddie Nketiah because he didn’t react quick enough to get back on side, as he stated that is what ‘annoys me’ about football today.

With Gabriel Jesus still trying to get back to full fitness, the former Manchester City man was named on the bench for the trip to Goodison Park.

And, just after the hour mark, he was introduced into the action, with Nketiah, in the end, leaving the field after causing very little damage to Everton’s backline, whilst Leandro Trossard scored the only goal of the game to ensure that first-half moment wasn’t costly.

“It was offside, it’s one of the things that annoys me more than anything when watching football nowadays,” said Wright.

“When we were offside, one of the things they used to say to you was ‘get yourself onside as soon as you can’. 

“When you see the margins now. It is even more so. It is even more you get yourself onside as soon as you can because this ball can ricochet to you. But you have to be in an onside position for you to carry on playing.

“Eddie hasn’t done that and we know what the margins are now. That’s offside, so there is nothing to complain about. It doesn’t matter how close it is. The fact is, if he rushes himself on side, the ball comes to him, then he will be on side. It’s as simple as that.”

Nketiah fails to take his chance

The 24-year-old, who was recently called up by England, failed to take or probably keep his starting place after failing to score.

The issue for Nketiah is that he was only starting this season because Jesus was injured, and you would think now he is getting back to his best, the Englishman will be back to the bench next week. 

Arsenal will be in Champions League action, with a heavy fixture load to come up, and whilst Jesus might be the main man again, you would still expect Nketiah to get enough minutes so he can still prove his worth.
