Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli had a goal ruled out against Everton and even Gary Neville is a little baffled by the decision.

Gary Neville has questioned the lines used by VAR to rule out Gabriel Martinelli’s strike against Everton this afternoon.

Arsenal headed to Goodison Park searching for a better result than last season’s trip to the blue half of Merseyside.

Mikel Arteta suffered a 1-0 defeat against his former club earlier this year and Arsenal needed to be wary of another shock.

All the talk before kick-off surrounded Arteta’s decision to bench Aaron Ramsdale in favour of David Raya – but now it’s all about VAR once again.

Gabriel Martinelli goal ruled out by VAR

Arsenal had been dominant in the first half with Everton barely able to string passes together, never mind attacks.

It looked like the Gunners had taken the lead as Gabriel Martinelli ran in behind before slotting past Jordan Pickford.

However, the goal was ruled out when VAR adjudged Eddie Nketiah to be offside in the build-up.

Gabriel Magalhaes was playing a pass towards an Arsenal teammate, only for Everton striker Beto to deflect the ball forward.

Gary Neville reacts to Arsenal disallowed goal

Neville was absolutely convinced that Nketiah was being played onside by Vitaliy Mykolenko, was late to get out from the back.

The lines were drawn and showed that Nketiah’s heel was offside, but Neville wasn’t convinced at all.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville suggested that the angle being used to show that Nketiah was offside didn’t quite look right.

Neville added that he was confused as Nketiah looked onside at first, believing that the lines drawn were ‘weird’.

“That’s weird,” said Neville. “Is there no better angle than that? Even I’m a little confused. It looked like he was well behind,” he added.
