‘I HAVE NEVER SEEN’: THIERRY HENRY BLASTS ARSENAL DEFENDER WILLIAM SALIBA

Thierry Henry wasn’t pleased with William Saliba and how he defended RC Lens’ second goal as Arsenal fell to a defeat in the Champions League.

It was the first loss for Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal side this season, and in truth, they can’t have many arguments because it was deserved.

The highly-rated Elye Wahi provided the decisive moment when he found space inside the penalty area following a cross from the right channel and swept home the winning goal.

Thierry Henry was critical of Willaim Saliba for backing off and allowing the Lens striker to shoot by adding ‘I have never seen the space scoring a goal’, as he told CBS Sport on Paramount+ (03/10/23 at 10:35 pm).

That was a rare bad judgment call from the France international because, since making his senior debut last season for Arsenal, he has been outstanding.

But sometimes, you have to take the rough with the smooth, as Henry shared his thoughts on his fellow countryman’s performance in the Champions League last night.

“But can we talk about Saliba,” said Henry. “The space never scores a goal. Can you have a look at where your striker is?

“If you go back to the last angle, he never looks at where the number nine is. Only the nine can score there. Or the winger can come inside. Saliba never looks to see what Wahi does. Never looks!

“I have never seen the space scoring a goal.”

Arsenal need to move on

It was going to come, but that’s Arsenal’s first defeat of the season and they need to move on very quickly.

The injury to Bukayo Saka is the biggest worry for Arsenal, especially with the Manchester City showdown around the corner.

The likes of Saliba will be back to their best in next to no time, but it won’t help matters if Saka is out for a prolonged period of time because this could have been avoided.
