Arsenal should beat Barcelona to the signing of Everton midfielder Amadou Onana during the January transfer window.

The Gunners currently have Declan Rice as an undisputed holding midfielder, but they need more depth and competition in the squad to go all the way and win the Premier League.

Jorginho has been inconsistent with his performances this term while Thomas Partey has struggled to stay fit over an extended period. Mohamed Elneny is currently out of contention.

All three of them could leave the club at the end of the campaign and in our view, the Gunners should be pro-active with a winter approach for Onana, who could make a difference in the title race.

Onana has established himself as one of the best young defensive midfielders in the Premier League. He has been exceptional this term with an average of 7.6 duels won per game.

The 22-year-old has won an impressive 71 per cent of his aerial challenges while registering 2.5 tackles per outing. He has also made 6.1 ball recoveries on average for the Toffees.

On top of this, the former Lille man has caught the eye with his physical presence and tireless work rate over 90 minutes. In our view, he appears a no-brainer signing for Arsenal.

Barcelona are also interested in landing his signature, according to today’s edition of Marca, but Arsenal should have an advantage over the Blaugrana, who have spending restrictions.

It has been clearly mentioned by club president Joan Laporta that the club can only afford a loan deal which should put them out of the race for Onana in the upcoming window.

Marca claim that Onana could be signed for £43 million which the Gunners should afford. If Arsenal can recruit him alongside Ivan Toney, they could genuinely win the title this term.
