Ahead of the January transfer window, a lot of Arsenal fans will be hoping that their club will break the bank for a striker to boost their title hopes.

Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah have both had fine moments, however the jury is still slightly out on their consistent goal scoring ability.

Some may consider any doubts harsh on Jesus, but a striker who doesn’t always prioritise goals will never fit well with some.

And that explains why so many are desperate for Mikel Arteta to consider the signing of Ivan Toney

And whilst it seems unlikely that Arsenal will add a striker in January, Toney would surely be a smart addition.

Pundit warns Brentford striker Ivan Toney against a move to Arsenal in January

That being said, when speaking on talkSPORT this morning, Rio Ferdinand didn’t think a move would actually be a good idea for Toney himself.

Ferdinand warned against a January move to Arsenal for the striker, saying Toney owed some loyalty to Brentford.

He said: “I think he should get back playing.

“The temptation if Arsenal or Chelsea are sniffing round must be there, as he may never get another chance to go to a big club like that but I think he owes Brentford who have stuck by him and I think he should get out there and give six months to Brentford and then move in the summer, get himself playing again.

“You never lose your eye for a goal. The temptation is there but I would just get back playing, get my head down, bang some goals in and it’ll still be there in the summer because everyone needs someone who can score 20 goals and he looks like a rare animal who can.”

Of course, a lot of fans will agree with those sentiments.

Perhaps it also hasn’t been considered that £55M Toney may also not be ready to hit the ground running for Arsenal if he did sign in January.

Mikel Arteta should wait until the summer window

Whilst the January window is always tempting for clubs – it’s hard to say no to a mid-season boost.

A similarly patient approach that Arsenal showed last year should probably be advisable.

Perhaps the likes of Victor Osimhen may then become a realistic prospect, a player who could prove a transformative signing for Arsenal.

Options will be reduced if Arsenal seek a striker in January, and a deal may not even be possible owing to finances anyway.

However, Kevin Campbell has now called for Arsenal to sell a £60m player in order to raise funds.
