‘Let me tell you’: Kevin Campbell says £68m defender would ‘love’ to join Arsenal now
Arsenal have been linked with a move to sign Matthijs de Ligt, and Kevin Campbell thinks the Dutchman would love to join the Gunners.
Mikel Arteta and co have two very challenging transfer windows in front of them. The one in January is open already, and irrespective of what happens now, the summer window will be extremely important. De Ligt is reportedly a target.
Kevin Campbell thinks Matthijs de Ligt would love to join Arsenal
Arsenal have a fantastic central defence thanks to Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba.
The duo has formed one of the best partnerships in Europe over the last 18 months, and Arsenal are mostly in safe hands when they start.
However, there is always room for improvement, and reports have claimed that Matthijs de Ligt is a player admired by Mikel Arteta and his coaching staff.
A move in January is unlikely, but Campbell believes the Dutchman would love to join Arsenal if he gets the opportunity.
He said on The Highbury Squad: “He knows the Ajax style, you know, passing it from the back. Very good reputation, he just lost his way a little bit by going to Juventus, didn’t he? But very, very good player.
“There are gems like that who you can nab, you could snap them up. You know, very good players who would love to come to the Arsenal, let me tell you.”
De Ligt could be an option in the summer
You have to be a solid player for Bayern Munich to pay £68 million (Sky Sports) to sign you, and Matthijs de Ligt is just that.
The Dutchman was always destined to be a star. He was fantastic during his time at Ajax, and even though he had some difficult moments for Juventus and the national team, he’s a fantastic player.
There’s no chance Arsenal will be able to sign De Ligt in this window, but things could change in the summer, especially if Mikel Arteta decides he wants an upgrade on Gabriel.
Bayern will definitely demand a big fee to let him go having signed him just 18 months ago, but Arsenal have shown that they aren’t afraid to splash the cash.
It will be interesting to see what Arsenal will do with their defence this year.
