‘Wonderful’… Alan Shearer simply blown away by £60m player Arsenal want to sign this month

Alan Shearer has now been delivering his verdict on a forward that Arsenal reportedly would like to sign before the January transfer window ends.

Mikel Arteta’s side delivered a much needed performance yesterday, one that allayed a lot of the club’s worries before the break.

A warm winter training camp in Dubai seemed to prove as a timely rest for Arteta’s team who were struggling with their confidence in front of goal.

However, Gabriel Magalhaes’ determination to score and make use of all of Nicolas Jover’s hard work quickly settled things.

It’s clear that Arsenal have been keen to take even further advantage of set piece situations.

And that being said, it was quite pertinent that one of their transfer targets was doing the same in his own performance just a few hours after Arsenal’s win.

Ivan Toney finally returned for Brentford yesterday and Alan Shearer was amazed by the forward’s performance, a player who clearly has what it takes to join a club like Arsenal.

Toney scored the opener in Brentford’s 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest.

However, it was the forward’s all-round display that impressed Shearer the most, perhaps an understated part of his game.

Speaking on the BBC’s Match of the Day, Shearer was blown away by Toney’s performance so soon after his ban.

Shearer said: “He was integral to everything good about them [Brentford] today and he played a huge part in their victory.”

He continued: “It wasn’t all down the middle also, he played his part by going out wide and linking up throws or whatever it was going to be.

“You could just tell that everyone, and rightly so, was happy to have him back.”

Shearer then continued to discuss Toney’s goal: “It’s a fantastic strike.

“And I said about him not just being a focal point down the middle there, what about that [pass] again for Keane Lewis-Potter, it’s a wonderful ball.

Mikel Arteta would seem to love to have the forward at Arsenal, and will probably agree with a lot of Alan Shearer’s sentiments when he checks in on the performance himself.

It often feels as if £60m Toney is presented as an in-the-box goalscorer, a player who can’t link the play like Gabriel Jesus but is a much better finisher.

But it simply doesn’t seem like that is the case.

That being said, Ian Wright was very surprised by one decision Arteta made yesterday.

“Linking play was excellent [by Toney], holding the ball up there and putting it in behind.”

Shearer continued: “Another wonderful ball, the weight of pass was superb in behind there for [Neal] Maupay.”
