Arsenal told they’d only have to pay £18m to sign ‘unbelievable’ striker this week

Perhaps a big opportunity has now arisen for Mikel Arteta and Arsenal in their pursuit of a striker this month.

Whilst Arsenal’s title hopes are not completely derailed, Arteta’s side did take a big hit when losing consecutive league games over Christmas.

Both losses showcased a problem with Arsenal’s finishing, with neither Gabriel Jesus or Eddie Nketiah doing enough against West Ham United and Fulham.

Consequently, almost all of Arsenal’s time away in Dubai was dominated by talk of the club signing a striker this month.

And whilst Arsenal simply don’t have the funds to launch a bid for Ivan Toney in January – a move that would please a lot of fans, an interesting option has just arisen as a result of Newcastle United’s need to sell players.

Alexander Isak was said to be the striker Arsenal were chasing in the near future, however, they’ve also shown interest in Callum Wilson in the past.

And according to The Standard, Arsenal have now been alerted to Wilson’s availability in the final week of the transfer window.

Via this new information, 31-year-old Wilson could be available for as little as £18m before January ends.

The report says that both Chelsea and Manchester United have also been alerted to Wilson’s availability.

And whilst a move for the striker may divide opinion among Arsenal fans, it’s certainly one to consider.

Despite suffering with injury this season, Wilson has more Premier League goals than anyone in Arteta’s Arsenal squad.

The Newcastle front-man has scored seven in 14 games, with Bukayo Saka’s six in 20 the highest tally at the Emirates.

There’s certainly no doubt that Wilson does know where the goal is, and he would be an upgrade on Eddie Nketiah.

But does Wilson have the fitness record to justify a move led by short-term thinking?

Is it realistic to think Wilson can play enough of the remaining games?

Either way, it’s certainly one for Arsenal to consider this month given how rare it is to achieve good value for a striker in January.

If Wilson did arrive, that would surely mean that Nketiah would have to seek a loan move this month.

Gabriel Jesus is going nowhere and Arteta can’t carry three strikers for the run in.

Of course, a move for Wilson this month could also compromise Arsenal’s new summer plans.
