‘I really, really liked it’… Pundit says Arsenal player ruined 24-year-old Liverpool star’s afternoon on Sunday
Paul Scholes has issued his verdict on the performance of Kai Havertz after the Arsenal star led the line for Mikel Arteta’s side in their win over Liverpool on Sunday.
Arteta made a couple of surprising calls ahead of the clash with the Premier League leaders. Jorginho came into the midfield alongside Declan Rice. Meanwhile, Kai Havertz started up front ahead of Eddie Nketiah with Gabriel Jesus missing the game.
Havertz has continued to have his doubters at Arsenal. The Germany international has not exactly built upon his impressive run of form from late November.
Kai Havertz impressed for Arsenal in Liverpool win
But his best performances for Arsenal have arguably come when the 24-year-old has been up front. He was excellent in the first-half of the Community Shield against Manchester City. And he is most definitely a handful for defenders.
Ibrahima Konate picked up two yellow cards after two clashes with Havertz. And Havertz worked incredibly hard for the Gunners.
He did miss a glorious chance which Bukayo Saka would then score from. But speaking on Handbrake Off, Man United legend Scholes suggested that he was hugely impressed by the forward’s display.
“I really liked it, I really, really liked it. I felt like the formation was pretty much 4-4-2 with two withdrawn strikers. That may be might the formula moving forwards, whether it’s Jorginho and Rice or Partey and Rice, that that’s a strong enough midfield two to go with two forwards that also chip in defensively. That’s our big game formula, it feels like,” he said.
“Whether it’s Havertz or Jesus, they can both work the front line. What I really like about Havertz is his movement. He’s a very intelligent player and he gets into positions and makes runs that are hard for defenders. You just wish that when he gets on the end of those runs, he’s a little bit more assertive and brilliant. But I thought that the way that he stood on Konate and basically ruined Konate’s afternoon was great to watch.
“I haven’t rewatched the whole match back yet. I’ve watched the first half hour, and he basically just stands on Konate or in and around him, and just gives him hell. And I love to see it. Top performance from him.
“I don’t think it’s debatable actually. I think his best position for the Arsenal is there. It is there.”
Gunners fans rewarded for backing summer signing
Havertz has not been good enough in front of goal since his arrival. However, he has still managed to score as many goals in the Premier League as Gabriel Jesus this season.
The big transfer fee did him no favours, particularly as Chelsea also spent a significant sum on him. But obviously, he has absolutely no say in the transfer fees which take him from club to club.
The Arsenal fans have backed Havertz. And they have been rewarded. While he has been anonymous in some games, he has also come up with some big moments since his move.
