Although Arsenal don’t start their Champions League knockout-tie until next week, one former player was in brilliant form last night.

Mikel Arteta’s side are currently looking forward to two legs against FC Porto, which will begin next Wednesday after this weekend’s trip to Burnley.

It’s not quite the ‘business end’ of the season just yet, but it’s certainly heading in that direction.

And it’ll certainly be interesting to see how Arteta chooses to use all three of Leandro Trossard, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus in these games.

The latter’s involvement is still fitness dependent, but the two spots available for those three names is arguably the biggest call for Arteta to make.

That being said, a player that the Arsenal manager decided to let go during his tenure was in brilliant shape last night

Matteo Guendouzi’s Lazio side were in action against Bayern Munich yesterday evening winning 1-0 in their home leg, and the former Arsenal man was in fine form.

Of course, Guendouzi officially left Arsenal for a fee of £9m in 2022, heading to Marseille before he now joined Lazio on loan with an obligation to buy.

Guendouzi played all 90 minutes, winning the player of the match award.

And when reviewing his performance, Italian outlet Lazio News were incredibly impressed.

The publication reviewed each individual performance and said that Lazio needed to lean on Guendouzi’s experience.

They wrote: “He is electric, at times omniscient: he can be on attack and on defence at the same time, so much so that he seems triune. And how important is experience at these levels.”

Of course, given Guendouzi is still only 24-years-old it begs the question – did Arsenal let him go too early? 

But it simply didn’t seem to be a good fit for the Frenchman under Arteta, perhaps it was a clash of ideas or personality.

So whilst Arsenal fans may be a little perplexed to see their former player doing so well on Europe’s biggest stage, the Champions League, they should rest assured that the right decision was made.

That being said, Arsenal may have already found their next big midfield sensation.
