Daniel Farke spoke to the media ahead of Leeds United’s trip to face Plymouth with the two sides preparing for Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off – and he says Sam Byram will not be available to play.

Byram, 30, has arguably been the surprise package of the season so far. Joining initially on trial with the defender struggling with injuries over the last few years, he reunited with Farke in Leeds United training.

His performances in training and in pre-season against the likes of Monaco and Nottingham Forest saw Leeds hand Byram a new one-year deal. He has played 28 times so far this season. But, injuries, as well.

Byram was missing from the squad that travelled to Swansea on Tuesday, a hamstring issue preventing him from playing. But, Farke has confirmed that it was not the hamstring that hampered him for so long.

There have been a few niggling injuries now after an intense run of fixtures over the last few weeks. He is now looking to recover and Farke says he could miss the next two matches, as per the club’s YouTube.

“He won’t be available, he might not be back for Leicester – it would be the same as Patrick. Would be a nice little surprise if possible, but we will be without him for the next game and probably Leicester.”

Indeed, Farke confirmed that like Byram, Patrick Bamford is set to miss tomorrow’s match and could be sidelined for the Friday night clash against Leicester. The latter a huge blow, given his recent form.

Byram’s omission is also a blow. But Jamie Shackleton is back after the birth of his son, and of course, Connor Roberts has signed – meaning we have cover at full-back for Archie Gray and Junior Firpo.

So, losing Byram is not the end of the world but for a player that is desperate to sign a new deal at Leeds, with his contract set to expire in June – it does place his future into further doubt.
