Borussia Dortmund star Donyell Malen has revealed that his dream is to play in the Premier League and join Arsenal’s boyhood club.
It was previously reported that BVB were prepared to allow the Dutchman to leave the club in January. However, they never received a concrete approach, so no agreement was reached.
The striker has enjoyed a productive period recently, scoring six goals in his last seven appearances in all competitions. However, despite the 25-year-old’s recent impressive performances, Dortmund should still be willing to pay for him.
It is believed that BVB could ask around £43 million for the sale of their star player, with Liverpool planning a possible summer purchase.
However, speaking to Voetbalzone, Malen revealed that his “dream” is to play in the Premier League and that he wants to return to Arsenal because it is his “favourite club”.
The striker added that he had trained with Arsenal’s first team when he was younger, but had not managed to break into the starting eleven, so he decided to leave the Gunners and play first team elsewhere.
Malen to Arsenal
Malen said:
“Having played in England when I was young, playing in the Premier League is a dream come true for me. I think it’s a nice dream. When I was younger I went to Arsenal, so yes, to them. I want Arsenal, my favourite club. That’s where I played when I was young, that’s where I really wanted to break through. Every now and then in your football career you have to make a decision.
“Yes, I trained with the first team, I was 17, 18 at the time and I was really making steps in the right direction, but I thought I only had to play professional football. I also saw my teammates who were playing professional football while I was still playing youth football and I just knew that [leaving] was the right thing to do.”
It is widely speculated that Arsenal will sign a new incisive striker in the summer to strengthen its front line. Ahead of the summer window, several names were linked with a transfer to the Emirates Stadium, with Ivan Toney and Victor Osimhen said to be the main targets.
However, both strikers will cost Arsenal a huge amount, so Malen could be a cheaper alternative option if they decide to go for him.
However, it is questionable whether the former PSV Eindhoven star has the necessary qualities to help Arsenal realise their lofty ambitions. Therefore, Arsenal would be better off signing Toney or Osimhen in the summer to strengthen their attacking department.
