Former Arsenal star Theo Walcott has sparked debate with a surprising claim about the best finisher he played alongside during his career. In a recent interview with the BBC on TikTok, Walcott, who had the privilege of sharing the pitch with some of football’s finest players, revealed that he rates Robin van Persie as a better finisher than Thierry Henry.

Walcott, who played alongside both legends at Arsenal, has been constructing his “ultimate player” by selecting the best attributes from former teammates and opponents. While he unsurprisingly chose Lionel Messi for dribbling and Cesc Fabregas for passing, his pick for finishing raised eyebrows.

“The best finisher for me would be Robin van Persie. That left foot was genuinely a wand. Surprisingly, not Thierry Henry—so yeah, Robin van Persie,” Walcott explained.

This statement is particularly bold given Henry’s legendary status at Arsenal. The Frenchman scored more Premier League goals than Van Persie and is widely considered one of the greatest players in the competition’s history. However, Walcott believes the Dutchman’s finishing ability was more clinical.

Despite this, Walcott clarified that as an all-around player, he still prefers Henry. In fact, in a previous discussion ranking Arsenal legends, he placed Henry above Van Persie and even Dennis Bergkamp.

In a ranking of Arsenal legends for the Daily Mail, Theo Walcott made no hesitation when it came to Robin van Persie. From the outset, Walcott placed ‘RVP’ ahead of other notable names, including Alexis Sanchez, Olivier Giroud, Mesut Özil, and even Robert Pires.

When it came to Bukayo Saka, Walcott paused briefly but ultimately stuck with Van Persie, maintaining that only one player could surpass the Dutch striker.

That player was Thierry Henry, who topped Walcott’s list. In the final selection, Henry edged out Dennis Bergkamp to claim the top spot as Arsenal’s greatest legend, according to Walcott.

Henry’s extraordinary achievements, including multiple Premier League Golden Boots and holding the record for most assists in a Premier League season, cement his place as one of the game’s all-time greats.
