Nottingham Forest have won six straight Premier League matches and are within six points of Liverpool – their next opponents – and Neco Williams is feeling confident

Neco Williams rapped “Bring on Liverpool” after Nottingham Forest sent another club record tumbling.

The Wales international is looking forward to a “special” night at the City Ground on Tuesday as Arne Slot’s table-toppers head for the east Midlands. Williams, a former Red himself, knows that the fixture will be seen as a litmus test as to whether Nuno Espirito Santo’s men have what it takes to mount a genuine title charge.

Victory will leave Forest three points behind the Merseysiders after the former European Champions broke a 58-year-old record by winning six on the spin with their 3-0 triumph over Wolves at Molineux.

Williams said: “We’re still only halfway through the season. We still have a lot to give. We’re taking each game as it comes. For us, now, the focus is on Luton in the FA Cup.

“Then, it is Liverpool – which will be a tough test – but the confidence is flowing through the group now. It will be special for the whole team, we are up there. We are the only team to beat them this season so hopefully we can do that again.

“It’s going to be tough. We know how good they are. They are probably one of the best teams in the world right now. But with our confidence, our winning form, our 12th-man – the fans – if that all comes together then we have a chance.”

After the final whistle, the message was clear: boss Nuno said he wouldn’t be looking at the Premier League table anytime soon. And striker Chris Wood echoed his team-mate’s thoughts when he was asked about a title challenge.

He said: “It’s well and truly way too early to talk about that. We’re not thinking anything like that. It’s Luton on Saturday – and then we can focus on Liverpool.”

Jamie Carragher believes Forest should be considered genuine contenders for the title if they beat Liverpool for the second time this season. “If they beat Liverpool next then they are in the title race. They are the only team to beat Liverpool. What I would say is right now, you’re talking about the title race, which is understandable,” he told Sky Sports.

“But if Champions League goes to the top five positions then they’ve got a hell of a chance. It’s just what the other teams do. I think as a Premier League we need Nottingham Forest to make the top five.

“What it does and it’s the same as Aston Villa. A couple of years ago they’d only been back in the Premier League a couple of seasons. Forest are the same. It gives hope to so many clubs who are struggling.”
