Worried Eddie Howe as Newcastle United hope three key players don’t have ‘major’ injuries after Harvey Barnes

Eddie Howe has delivered some worrying Newcastle United injury news ahead of the Premier League clash against Wolves.

Newcastle United will look to make it nine wins in a row across all competitions when Wolves visit St James’ Park on Wednesday evening.

In the last two matches, Newcastle have kept themselves in the running for silverware after building a two-goal advantage in the Carabao Cup semi-final before booking a spot in the fourth round of the FA Cup by beating Bromley 3-1 on Sunday afternoon.

Eddie Howe heavily rotated his Newcastle lineup against Bromley to give some players a much-needed rest. It also allowed Trevan Sanusi to make his Newcastle debut and William Osula to score his first goal for the club.

Howe will likely return to the XI that has built up great momentum in the Premier League, but several injury doubts might force him to chop and change.

Eddie Howe provides injury update on Newcastle United trio

Compared to previous seasons, Newcastle have done well to avoid any major injuries this season but the hectic winter schedule is starting to take its toll.

The most alarming injury news from the Bromley win is that Harvey Barnes is out for a month after being forced off at half-time.

Howe has now revealed there are three Newcastle players who are facing a late fitness test to feature against Wolves.

Sven Botman, Jacob Murphy and Joe Willock were all left out of the matchday squad on the weekend and Howe has explained that they have all suffered “minor problems”.

When asked about the trio in his pre-match press conference, Howe said: “We’ll have a look at them again today.

“They were left out with genuine reasons, all different things, but nothing major we hope. So minor problems that we needed to settle down. Fingers crossed they’ll be there or thereabouts.

On Botman in particular, Howe added: “It is always a balance because after two big physical games, with Sven we needed to rest and recover. There was a few warning signs that he was going into a fatigue.”

Will Alexander Isak start for Newcastle vs Wolves?
On top of the minor fitness concerns around Botman, Murphy and Willock, Howe also commented on whether Isak will play after being left out of the Bromley squad.

Isak has scored in seven consecutive Premier League games and Howe says he is “desperate” to extend that record on Wednesday evening.

“Yeah, he’ll be desperate to play, of course,” Howe said about Isak.

“Those runs I’m not really too focused on and I’m not too interested in but I understand the individuals will care deeply about them. I’d love Alex to continue to score.

“I think the most important thing for me is that the team is functioning well for him and he’s functioning well for the team. The two things go hand in hand together.

“We have looked like scoring goals recently, that’s such a big thing for our confidence levels. He’s played a big part in that, hopefully that continues.”
