Atlanta United are reportedly now the front-runners to pull off a shock reunion for Newcastle United misfit Miguel Almiron.
Until now, MLS interest came from Charlotte FC, the club strongly linked with a move for the Paraguayan last summer. The North Carolinian outfit were understood to be chasing Almiron this month as Newcastle aim to ease up their wage bill.
However, his wages, believed to be around £60,000 per week, proved a stumbling block. Charlotte FC have changed tack and are now plotting an ambitious move for former Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha.
That has paved the way for Atlanta to tempt a possible reunion six years after selling Almiron for £21million. At the time, the Magpies paid a club-record fee but the 30-year-old’s career is now at a crossroads following six roller-coaster years at St James’ Park.
With 18 months remaining on his Toon deal, now is the perfect chance to cash in or risk losing him for a nominal fee this summer. Newcastle are demanding around £11million for Almiron – £1million less than initially thought.
Interest remains from Brazilian club Atletico Mineiro, who are willing to pay £7.5million. A year ago, the Magpies were looking at around £25million for the winger, with Saudi Pro League club Al-Shabab a possible option.
But a lack of first-team action this season – and his dwindling contract has devalued Almiron. A poor showing against Bromley on Sunday appeared to sound the death knell for his Tyneside career.
The Athletic now report that talks between Atlanta and Newcastle are at an advanced stage and there is confidence a deal can be done within days. As mentioned, Almiron’s current pay packet had been a key stumbling block, with the forward catapulting up the wage structure after a purple patch in 2022-23.
