Alan Shearer passionately called out the Premier League and PGMOL after Myles Lewis-Skelly was shown a straight red card in the game between Arsenal and Wolves on Saturday afternoon.
The Gunners went into the game in desperate need of a victory if they wanted to remain in the Premier League title race. However that challenge got even more difficult when Michael Oliver sent off Myles Lewis-Skelly towards the end of the first-half.
The 18-year-old brought down Matt Doherty on the edge of the Wolves box to prevent a counter attack on the 43rd minute. A challenge which is always a yellow card, but Michael Oliver had other ideas.
The referee has a history of sending off Arsenal players, and he continued that this afternoon. Michael Oliver has sent off an Arsenal player eight times in the Premier League, which is more than any other team.
VAR Darren England felt no need to intervene with Michael Oliver’s original decision and the red card stood, much to the dismay of Arsenal fans and some other viewers.
Alan Shearer didn’t hold back in his review of the Arsenal red card: “As a referee you can get it wrong on the pitch, you might see something which is incorrect.
“How on earth Darren England, the VAR, thinks that the referee has got that right and there is no need to send him to the screen. One of the worst decisions that I’ve seen in a long time.
“I just cannot see and work out what VAR is thinking going along with Michael Oliver’s decision. No wonder it gets criticised by so many people.”
Mikel Arteta is convinced the red card will get overturned, with Myles Lewis-Skelly currently set to miss the upcoming matches against Manchester City and Newcastle United.
Mikel Arteta: “It is that clear that I leave it to you guys. I am absolutely fuming but I leave it with you. Because it is that obvious. I don’t think my words are going to help.”
