Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has acknowledged that he was below his usual standards during the team’s 2-0 victory over Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Saturday.
The Gunners initially struggled to break down Leicester, missing key players such as Kai Havertz, who has been ruled out for the season. Leandro Trossard started as a makeshift striker, but Arsenal lacked cutting edge in attack.
With Raheem Sterling also failing to make an impact, Mikel Arteta introduced midfielder Mikel Merino in the second half as an emergency striker. The tactical gamble paid off, as Merino netted a late brace to seal Arsenal’s crucial win.
Partey, who played 76 minutes before being substituted for Jorginho, later reflected on his performance in a candid Instagram post.
“On days when I’m not at my best, the strength of the team carries us to victory. Vamoooosss,” the Ghanaian wrote.
While Partey struggled, Merino stepped up to deliver for Arsenal. After the game, Arteta admitted the team was fortunate that the Spaniard delivered in front of goal.
“I think the game started to suit him more because they started to defend much deeper, and we had more momentum, more sequences, and more set-pieces in that period,” Arteta said. “We believed that he could impact the game, and we were lucky that he did.”
Arteta also emphasised that Arsenal will need to rely on different players stepping up in various situations.
“We’re going to have to share that responsibility. Sometimes we’ll need to make changes because a player isn’t performing, the opposition is doing something different, or due to fatigue or bookings,” he explained.
Despite his off-day against Leicester, Thomas Partey remains a key figure in Arsenal’s pursuit of the Premier League title. The Ghanaian has started 21 league games this season under Arteta, contributing three goals and two assists.
Since his £45 million move to Arsenal in 2020, Partey has also played a crucial role in various competitions, making ten additional appearances across all tournaments this season.
While Merino stole the headlines, Partey will be looking to bounce back as Arsenal continues their title charge in the final stretch of the season.
