‘I want to be’: Ryan Mason on closing the West Brom ‘gap’ as Albion bid to forget about latest late frustration

Ryan Mason insists West Brom are on the right track despite a mixed run of results, with his side determined to learn quickly and close the gap on their Championship rivals.

Albion have collected 11 points from their opening seven league fixtures – a steady return that leaves Mason encouraged by the early signs of progress. His men won three of their first four outings, and it could have been a perfect start had they not been denied by Portsmouth in a frustrating draw at The Hawthorns.

Momentum has stuttered somewhat in recent weeks. A late sucker-punch at Derby saw them leave empty-handed from a game they had largely controlled, while at Middlesbrough Albion were left with too much ground to recover after slipping 2-0 behind in what Mason felt was an evenly balanced contest.

Despite the setbacks, Mason believes the foundations are in place for Albion to push on.

> “I want to be part of a team that learns from these moments and becomes stronger,” he said. “We know the margins in this division are small, and if we can cut out those lapses, we’ll be right where we want to be.”

As Albion prepare for the next stretch of the campaign, the focus is on converting solid performances into consistent results – and ensuring that late frustration doesn’t become a recurring theme.
