Sunderland were second best throughout their 2-0 defeat away to Manchester United and Simon Adingra may have played his way out of Regis Le Bris’ starting lineup.
There was an air of excitement when the Black Cats sealed a deal for Adingra because of his Premier League experience. He made 60 appearances at Brighton & Hove Albion in the top-flight before making the move to the Stadium of Light this past summer.
What A Waste: Adingra Struggling at Sunderland
Le Bris was backed in the summer with an impressive transfer window, which saw Sunderland make eight signings amounting to around £140 million. The newly-promoted club spent more money than any other side outside of the big six.
Adingra arrived in a deal which could be worth up to £21 million, and fans were elated given Brighton’s tendency to scour the globe for top talent. There were glimpses of promise during his time at the Amex, which the Black Cats’ recruitment team clearly took under consideration.
The 23-year-old has arguably been the worst of the eight new arrivals and he was the second most expensive. While he is still relatively young and has room to grow, his side needs him to make an instant impact in their bid to avoid the drop.
Le Bris’s willingness to bring the Ivorian, handed a 3/10 player rating, off in the first half at Old Trafford indicates that he isn’t too impressed with the winger. He made just one pass during his time on the pitch and former Manchester City women’s star Steph Houghton backed the decision to make an early sub:
“I think something had to change, especially on that right hand side for United, they were being dominant with Amad and Mbeumo.”
Adingra’s place in the starting XI is now in doubt ahead of Wolverhampton Wanderers’ visit to the Stadium of Light next Saturday (October 18). Le Bris has proven he’s prepared to get tough, and that might be for the benefit of the summer signing to find form.
It was a day to forget for the Tyne and Wear outfit, who have arguably been the best performing newcomers in the top-flight. They failed to handle a motivated United side who made them pay albeit helped by the vulnerable duo of Masuaku and Adingra on the left.
