Gerrard, a Liverpool legend and former Rangers boss, led the club to their first Scottish Premiership title in a decade during his tenure from 2018 to 2021. His potential return has sparked excitement among fans, but several factors remain under consideration before any formal decision is made.

Over the summer, Rangers approached Gerrard about a possible return to Ibrox, but the 45-year-old rejected the offer, leading the club to appoint Russell Martin as manager instead. Martin’s tenure, however, has seemingly failed to meet expectations, prompting Rangers to revisit the idea of bringing Gerrard back. The club’s new sporting director, Kevin Thelwell, is spearheading the search for a managerial solution, and Gerrard’s proven track record at Rangers makes him an appealing choice.

His familiarity with the club, its culture, and the demands of the Scottish Premiership gives him an edge, but financial constraints could pose a challenge. Gerrard is currently managing Al-Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League, and his contract, along with potential compensation demands, could complicate negotiations

In addition to Gerrard, Thelwell has also explored other candidates, including Sean Dyche, with whom he worked during their time at Everton. Dyche, known for his pragmatic approach and Premier League experience, was considered for the role, but sources indicate he is not enthusiastic about the prospect of moving to Rangers.

The 54-year-old’s reluctance may stem from his current commitments or a preference to remain in English football, where he has built a reputation for stabilizing clubs under pressure. Thelwell’s prior working relationship with Dyche made him a logical candidate, but it appears Rangers will need to look elsewhere if Dyche remains uninterested

Another name in the frame is Derek McInnes, the current manager of Hearts. McInnes has impressed with his leadership at the Scottish Premiership’s current leaders, guiding Hearts to a strong start in the 2025/26 season. His experience in Scottish football, including a previous stint at Aberdeen, makes him a credible option for Rangers. However, prising McInnes away from Hearts would not be straightforward.

The Edinburgh club is determined to retain their manager, and any formal approach from Rangers would likely be met with resistance. Hearts’ position at the top of the league table underscores McInnes’s credentials, but it also strengthens their resolve to keep him.
