“I’ve never seen a league won after just 10 games”- Ashley Young hits back at criticism of Town’s Championship position

Ashley Young isn’t focusing on Ipswich Town’s position in the Championship table following Tuesday’s 3-0 defeat at home to Charlton Athletic.

The Blues were soundly beaten on Suffolk soil, collapsing in a second-half implosion that saw the Addicks claim all three points.

It leaves Town sitting 14th in the division with 13 points from three wins, four draws and three losses. They were spared a defeat at Blackburn Rovers due to a late abandonment, meaning that they do have a game in hand on the teams above them.

For Young, however, it all means very little at this stage.

“I’ve never seen a league won after 10 games,” he argued. “If you’re saying it’s taking shape, we’ve still got so many games left to play. That’s what we’re going to be focusing on and concentrating on.

“The next one for us is West Brom this Saturday, so we’re not looking as far ahead as to look at the table. If you ask me the same question come May time, I’ll give you an answer.”

Individual errors proved costly in that match, but Young believes that everyone involved in the clash at Portman Road needs to reflect on the match and what needs to change heading into Saturday’s game against West Brom.

“I think it’s a collective,” he said. “We’re a team

“When things don’t go right, it’s a team game. We’re all in it together and there’s 11 people out on the pitch.

“When we concede, we all concede together. When we score, we all score together.

“It’s disappointing. We’ll obviously look at them [the goals conceded to Charlton] and watch them back to see what caused them.

“We need to recover and get ourselves prepared for Saturday.”

Looking ahead to the next game against the Baggies, Ipswich will be without first-choice goalkeeper Alex Palmer, who picked up an injury in the early stages against Charlton earlier this week.

It will open the door for Christian Walton to come in, and Young has full faith that he will deliver.

“We’ve got confidence in all the goalkeepers,” he stated. “We’ve seen day in, day out in training that they are hard to beat at times.

“We’ve got faith in every single goalkeeper. If it’s Walts who’s going to come in, we’ve got every faith in him that he’s going to do well.”
