Southampton have reportedly agree a deal for Arsenal’s want away player.

The 19-year-old defender has been in the Gunners’ youth setup since 2012 but has risen through the ranks in recent seasons to become a key member of the Under-21s.

Awe was named on Arsenal’s first-team bench for the first time in February 2022 for a Premier League game against Wolves but is yet to make a senior appearance under Mikel Arteta.

The teenager is comfortable with the ball at his feet and can play out from the back, something which will please Russell Martin as he reworks his Southampton squad to suit his style of play.

Saints’ options at centre-back currently include Jack Stephens, Jan Bednarek, Shea Charles, Armel Bella-Kotchap, Duje Caleta-Car, Lyanco and Mohammed Salisu, though the latter quartet have been linked with exits this summer.

If all four were to depart it would leave Southampton incredibly light at the back, hence a move for Awe looks to be a sensible deal. According to the Telegraph, Arsenal will receive compensation due to Awe’s age at the time of his transfer, with Saints reportedly beating out strong competition for the defender’s signature.

Championship side Huddersfield Town were said to have an early interest in Awe, while Leicester City are also said to have discussed a move for the centre-back.
