Former Premier League left-back Warnock spoke about how the Brazil star proceeded to struggle again when he went back home, but since returning to the Premier League with Fulham, he has been ‘exceptional’, as he told Sky Sports Premier League’s Summer Series.
That included helping Silva’s side avoid relegation last season by securing a very healthy top-half finish in the Premier League – in previous years, Fulham would go straight back down after earning promotion.
When Willian joined Fulham last summer, he only signed a one-year contract and he has since extended his stay at Craven Cottage, with Warnock praising the experienced forward.
“When you look at Willian, things really didn’t go well for him at Arsenal,” said Warnock. “He didn’t enjoy Arsenal and then he went back to Brazil, and it didn’t work for him there.
“Then you come back to the Premier League and you think ‘that’s going to be too much of a challenge’. But he has looked exceptional. Some of the goals and the creativity. And he was the standout player in the game in Orlando the other day. He came onto the pitch and the levels of Fulham lifted.”
Willian proving doubters wrong
The two-time Premier League winner didn’t exactly leave Chelsea on a good note and he was allowed to leave for nothing.
Then he proceeded to have that unforgettable stint at the Emirates, before things became worse when he played for Corinthians in his home country of Brazil.
A lot of people could have and would have been doubting the player upon Fulham’s call to sign him, but a credit to the player for picking himself up and Silva for getting the best out of him.
