Frank Leboeuf says he is backing Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal to win the Premier League title this season and he ‘can’t accept that’.
The former Chelsea player says Arsenal have a ‘very good team’ and he can see them getting the better of Treble-winning Manchester City.
Given the season Pep Guardiola’s side had, Leboeuf now feels that will lead to the champions, who are chasing a fourth Premier League title in a row, having an ‘off’ campaign, as he told ESPN.
On Sunday, the Gunners beat Manchester City to the Community Shield, with Leandro Trossard scoring a very late stoppage-time goal and then the London club winning the tie on penalties – Declan Rice had one word to describe the January signing.
Given Arsenal’s recent record against the champions, then from a psychological standpoint, this is a big boost heading into the new campaign.
Either way, whilst he doesn’t like to say or see it happening, Leboeuf is backing Arsenal for the title.
“I think Man City could have an off-season after the Treble, so I really think it’s possible that Man City is (off it),” said Leboeuf.
“I don’t like my list. I don’t like my prediction because I see the Gunners finishing first and I can’t accept that. But that’s a possibility. They have a very good team.”
Big pressure on Arteta
There can’t be any complaints now, he has to put the trophies on the table, or else, there will be a lot of criticism coming his way.
This just isn’t a case of Arteta being in the job for a while now, but the amount of money he has spent.
If Arsenal go trophyless again, then it will be interesting to see the reaction from the fans, both those who support the club and those from the outside.
