William Gallas believes £65M Arsenal’s summer signing Kai Havertz will flop at Arsenal following his move from Chelsea
Havertz has signed a five-year deal at the Emirates Stadium after ending his three-year stay at Stamford Bridge.
The Germany international won the Champions League with Chelsea but largely flattered to deceive, scoring 19 goals in 91 league appearances.
Havertz is expected to adopt a deeper role under Mikel Arteta but ex-Arsenal and Chelsea defender Gallas still doubts he will flourish in north London.
Asked if he believes Havertz will show his true potential at Arsenal, Gallas told Gambling Zone: ‘No, I don’t think so. I don’t believe Havertz was a player that Arsenal needed to sign this summer.
‘For me, even when he was at Chelsea, he was never consistent enough. He scored some important goals for the club, and he played well in flashes.
‘He didn’t put in enough good performances during his Chelsea career in my opinion. When I saw Arsenal were signing him, I didn’t really understand it. I was surprised that they signed him.’
Havertz is one of three new arrivals at Arsenal this summer along with England midfielder Declan Rice and Netherlands defender Jurrien Timber.
All three of Arteta’s summer signings started Sunday’s Community Shield victory over Premier League champions Manchester City.
The Gunners, who finished five points behind Man City last season, kick-start their 2023-24 Premier League campaign on Saturday against Nottingham Forest.
Following his summer move to Arsenal, Havertz said: ‘It’s super exciting for me to be joining this amazing club and to be part of the Arsenal family. This club has such a big history, and I hope we can achieve lots of things.
‘The mentality in the Arsenal squad is very high and you can feel that. That was one of the reasons why it has been so hard to play against Arsenal recently.
‘The aim is to win trophies and I’m going to give everything to do that for the supporters and everyone at the club. I’m now looking forward to meeting all the players and the staff when we come back for pre-season.’
