Is Oxford forward returning from injury the missing spark?
After suffering an ankle injury in pre-season, it has been a hefty wait for Ole Romeny to get back on a football pitch.
The January signing from Dutch side Utrecht was reportedly Oxford United’s most expensive signing in their history, beating the reported £1m fee paid for Siriki Dembele six months earlier.
Romeny came through the doors at Oxford Sports Park as a player highly thought of, with his Indonesian connection to co-owner Erick Thohir playing a part in his acquisition.
Picking up his first goal back in March in a 3-2 defeat to Coventry City, the Netherlands-born Indonesia international is yet to make his mark on Gary Rowett’s side.
The 25-year-old is able to play up front and out wide and has shown the best of himself at international level.
Prior to his injury in the summer, Romeny had bagged three goals in three games for the country in which his mother was born and was able to show some flair as a key player for Indonesia.
The former Dutch youth international possesses quick feet, agility and a good instinct in the box. His goal against Australia back in March saw Romeny nick the ball from in front of the Aussie defender to flick it over him and poke it into the net.
His singular goal in yellow also displayed good positioning, moving into space to allow Przemyslaw Placheta to cut the ball back to him and slot home.
The forward’s returned to action against Stoke City, with a nine-minute cameo from the bench but remained in the dugout for the duration of the U’s trip to the Hawthorns last weekend.
With summer additions such as Will Lankshear, Brian De Keersmaecker, and Filip Krastev all yet to play properly with Romeny, it will be fascinating to see whether he can kick on and take his chance to combine with this season’s new additions.
The ability is certainly there with the former Utrecht man, and he could provide the fresh spark United need going into a busy Christmas period.
