ex-Reading FC manager appointed as Oxford United head coach

Former Reading FC manager Liam Gilbert has been announced as the head coach of the Oxford United Women’s first team.

Liam Gilbert took over as Reading FC Women’s first team manager in 2023 following the departure of former Royals player Kelly Chambers.

Gilbert has returned to Oxford following a previous five-year spell in charge of Oxford United Women between 2018 and 2023.

Speaking about his return to Oxford, Liam Gilbert said: “I’m incredibly proud to be returning to Oxford United. This Club means a great deal to me, and I’m excited to build on the strong foundations already in place.

“In the two years since I’ve been away from the Club, there has been a huge growth in professionalism and ambition. I am excited to get started as we look to take Oxford United forward.

“I am extremely committed to working with the players, staff, and wider Club to ensure we take the next steps together. I can’t wait to get started and to reconnect with the supporters.”

Gilbert led Reading in the Women’s Championship to a 10th place finish, the Fourth Round of the FA Cup and an early exit of the EFL Cup.

In June 2024 it was confirmed that Reading had to withdraw from the Barclays Women’s Championship for the 2024-25 season, with the team moving down to Tier 5 of the Women’s Football Pyramid due to financial struggles.

The club announced in August 2024 that Pedro Bruno would take over duties as the team’s new first-team manager, without officially disclosing that Gilbert had left.

Gilbert then secured a role as assistant manager with Burnley FC Women in March.

Oxford United’s head of football development, Stevie Kinniburgh, said: “After a thorough and highly competitive recruitment process, we are very pleased to welcome Liam back to Oxford United.

“Having worked with Liam previously, we know exactly the standards, professionalism, and ambition he brings to the role. His understanding of the Club, coupled with the experience he has gained at Reading and Burnley, makes him the ideal person to lead our Women’s First Team.
