Championship pundit backs Oxford United manager Gary Rowett

EFL expert and Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman has spoken out in support of Oxford United manager Gary Rowett.

The former West Bromwich Albion striker has urged the U’s hierarchy to get behind Rowett in their quest for Championship survival.

The Yellows boss has been in charge at the Kassam for almost a year and helped the club stave off relegation in their first season back in the second tier in 25 years.

“Gary’s track record speaks for itself, doesn’t it?” Goodman told JeffBet.

“[Rowett] went on record after the West Brom game and he said he knows to keep his job he is going to have to win matches. He’s not daft and he said as much. He went in last season and they were in a worse predicament and he managed to dig them out of it and pull it round.

“So can you imagine if Oxford got rid of someone with his experience and it went horribly wrong and they ended up being relegated and going down to League One when they’ve already got somebody in the building who already has a track record of fire-fighting and doing well, over-achieving really a lot of time with what he’s got.

“If I was the Oxford hierarchy, I’d be looking to support him and back him rather than thinking he’s not the right man.”

United currently sit one place and three points above the relegation zone in 21st and face second-placed Middlesbrough this weekend.
