Ipswich Town are on the charge in the fight for promotion, with momentum building in the bid to return to the Premier League.
Ipswich Town sit 4th in the Championship table as they recover from a poor start. As the halfway of the campaign nears, ITFC are five points off the top two following one defeat in the last nine league games.
Automatic promotion is very much the goal for the Tractor Boys. Pressure is on Kieran McKenna and co to deliver on those ambitions as they aim high for the future.
The Town boss was backed well in the summer transfer window, but there is more money to spend. In the bid to close on the top two and strengthen their promotion charge, expect the East Anglian side to be active.
Here, we suggest three January transfer actions that could win Ipswich Town promotion…
Striker upgrade landed
To be a promotion winner, you have to be ruthless. That is both in transfer approach and in taking chances on the pitch.
Thankfully, Ipswich Town are a side boasting multiple goalscoring threats. However, to really take control of the promotion push, an upgrade at striker would go a long way for ITFC.
George Hirst has a respectable six goals but is prone to going fairly long spells without scoring, while Chuba Akpom has struggled for form and Ivan Azon is a developing forward. Signing a bonafide goalscorer who can come in and take the league by storm could be decisive in the promotion charge.
Ipswich Town fringe players depart
To streamline the squad and keep it fresh and competitive, there are a handful of players that could move on. This will benefit both them and Ipswich Town as a whole.
The two clear candidates are academy graduates Elkan Baggott and Cameron Humphreys. Although they are both still well-regarded within the Tractor Boys setup, they are on the fringes of the senior squad and need to be playing regularly at 23 and 22 respectively.
Interest will likely emerge at the top end of League One, though it is not out of the question that Championship sides take a look either.
Midfield dilemma resolved
Last but not least is the midfield department. Ipswich Town have some highly talented players in this area, but there is a case to be made that one more signing could really round out an impressive ITFC side.
Marcelino Nunez naturally plays a little deeper but has moved into a more advanced role in Sammie Szmodics‘ absence. Perhaps another attacking midfielder is required for some extra depth and to get the best out of Szmodics’ game again.
Alternatively, Nunez can be seen as a more permanent option in that role. If that is the case, one more central midfielder could be an upgrade to take Town to the next level.
