Fin Barbrook has had a challenging Lincoln City loan, and Ipswich Town are making new plans for the young midfielder.
Ipswich Town youngster Fin Barbrook will return from Lincoln City before making a new loan move in January, the Imps’ director of football Jez George has confirmed.
Ipswich Town will have eyes on potential January transfer window additions as they look to strengthen their promotion bid. Kieran McKenna’s side have gained momentum in recent weeks, but ITFC still have areas to improve.
Decisions will also be made over some of the Tractor Boys’ younger players. Some on the fringes could head out on loan, while the likes of Fin Barbrook see their current temporary deals assessed too.
Now, with January approaching, it has been confirmed new surroundings await Barbrook. Jez George, director of football at his current loan club Lincoln City, has confirmed the Ipswich Town prospect will be returning to his parent side in January ahead of a change of scenery.
“We’ve made an agreement with Ipswich,” George told The Stacey West. “Finn’s got a knock. He could possibly be fit for that last week of December. But realistically, that’s not right for us to stop him then going on loan somewhere else in the second half of the season.”
Lincoln City, Ipswich Town agreement keeps door open for new Fin Barbrook loan
Barbrook’s Lincoln City loan has been a challenging one. He has not made a League One matchday squad with the Imps, only finding action in the EFL Trophy.
However, this does play into his hands somewhat. Given that he played for Ipswich Town against Bromley in the EFL Cup before departing, there were concerns that he could not go and play for another club this season due to the two-club rule.
As George explains though, EFL Trophy matches do not apply to this rule. So, with Barbrook sitting out while he nurses a knock, he will be able to make a fresh switch in January.
It is perhaps only logical given Barbrook’s situation and his place in Michael Skubala’s pecking order, but this sort of action will not be overlooked. It should maintain a strong relationship between ITFC and the Imps, which the latter can benefit from further down the line.
Who else could Ipswich Town loan out in January?
Barbrook’s first shot at regular EFL football might not have gone to plan. However, off the back of strong stints in the National League and National League South should mean he is in line for a solid loan move this winter.
A League One stay seems unlikely, but League Two could be a logical next step for the promising 20-year-old midfielder.
Barbrook is unlikely to be the only prospect eyed for a temporary move from Portman Road. Cameron Humphreys and Elkan Baggott have been around the ITFC first-team as cover but both need game time to continue their development.
Among the U21s, there is a case to be made that Tudor Mendel-Idowu needs testing at a higher level. The likes of Henry Gray and Fraser Heard could also make new loan switches.
