The U’s are in the relegation zone after suffering defeat at the hands of Preston North End last weekend.

Retired left back Winterburn, who unsuccessfully went on trial with the Yellows early in his career, has opened up on Oxford’s battle as Christmas rapidly approaches.

Everyone says it and sometimes it frustrates people when you say you’ve just got to take every game as it comes, but every game has got three points on the line,” the 62-year-old told OLBG.

“You need to look at a club and its backing and try to understand where they’re going.

“But when you sit near the bottom, the one aspiration you have is to make sure you get out of the bottom three and stay out of it for the rest of the season.

“They’ve also had quite some good results as well as bad, but it’s going to be a fight all the way through to the end of the season.

“It’s so tight and I think you’ve just seen that Sheffield United have really struggled and then they went on a five or six game unbeaten run but they’re still sitting relatively low because of their start to the season.

“But in any league you win four, five, six games you’ve got to catapult yourself away from the teams at the bottom.

“For Oxford it’ll be a case of winning enough games, make sure we stay up because when you’re down there coming into Christmas, that’s really what you should be starting to think about.”
