Millwall are on the verge of completing their first signing of the summer, as they are set to complete the signing of Zac Sturge. The Chelsea youngster spent the second half of last season on loan at The Den and will now make the move permanent.
After joining the club in January, Sturge struggled to break into the team, only making two appearances up until April. However, the 21-year-old came into Alex Neil’s side for the final three games of the season.
In those games, Sturge managed to make a positive impact, helping pick up wins against Swansea City and Norwich City. After winning over the fans in those games, they will now be pleased that Millwall look to have made the move permanent for the left-back.
Sturge joined Chelsea’s academy from Brighton in 2022 and since then, he has trained with the first-team.
In 2023, Sturge spent the first half of the season on loan at Peterborough United. However, after struggling to pick up game time there, he was recalled by Chelsea.
Sturge impressed Neil
After bringing in Sturge in January, Millwall boss Neil took his time brining him into the side. Playing backup to Joe Bryan, Sturge was eventually given his opportunity in the final three games.
In those appearances, the Englishman managed to win over Neil, who would go on to sing his praises. His form would also be good enough to keep him in the side until the end of the campaign.
After seeing his ability, Neil has acted fast, looking to get a deal done early in the transfer window to bring Sturge back to the club.
Replacing Millwall’s defensive departures
Despite the club agreeing a new deal for Joe Bryan, there are a number of uncertainties for Millwall’s defence.
The club are in negotiations for a new contract for full back Danny McNamara. However, Murray Wallace and former captain Shaun Hutchinson have departed the club.
A significant story for the Lions is the release clause of Japhet Tanganga. The former Tottenham player’s clause is reportedly only £1.2m and with the amount being that low, a number of clubs are interested in acquiring his services.
With a number of defensive departures, it is important for Millwall’s preparations for next season that they have moved closer to securing the signing of Sturge.
