Oxford United eye fresh transfer bid for 22-year-old

Oxford United have the chance to bring in some more new signing before the end of the January transfer window under Matt Bloomfield.

Oxford United will place another bid for Reading midfielder Charlie Savage, according to the Reading Chronicle.

Oxford United have already seen an offer for the League One man rebuffed this winter. OUFC are preparing a fresh approach between now and the end of the January transfer window as they look to lure their target to the Kassam Stadium.

Savage, 22, has been a key player for Reading over recent times and is under contract until the summer of 2027 meaning they are under no immediate pressure to sell him. He has made 28 appearances in all competitions to date this season, 25 of which have come in the league, and he has chipped in with two goals and one assist.

In this latest update regarding his future this month, the Reading Chronicle have reported that the U’s are expected to try and test their resolve again with more money. They are in the hunt for some more new signings over the next couple of weeks as they look to preserve their Championship status.

Oxford United are in the relegation zone along with Sheffield Wednesday and Norwich City following their 0-0 draw with Bristol City last time out. They are five points from safety behind Portsmouth in 21st.

Oxford United will see Savage as someone to bolster their midfield department. If he joined OUFC, he would give them more competition and depth in the middle of the park.

He would battle it out with the likes of Cameron Brannagan, Will Vaulks, Brian De Keersmaecker and Jamie McDonnell for a place in Bloomfield’s starting XI. The latter has recently arrived at the Kassam Stadium from Nottingham Forest following a loan at Mansfield Town.

Savage, who is a Wales international with two caps to his name, joined Reading back in 2023. He has since played 124 games for the Royals and has found the net on 14 occasions.

The Leicester-born man rose up through the academy at Manchester United and was a regular at various different youth levels before playing once for their first-team. He was also loaned out away by the Red Devils to Forest Green Rovers to get some experience under his belt.

Oxford United need to fork out more cash to land Reading after their first bid was turned down. Time will tell whether OUFC will be able to meet his price tag.

In the meantime, the U’s are looking to get some more points on the board. They are back in action on Tuesday night at home to QPR.

They have turned to Matt Bloomfield as their replacement for Gary Rowett. He has managed Colchester United, Wycombe Wanderers and Luton Town in the past.
