Former Oxford United head coach Gary Rowett has emerged as a contender for the vacant Leicester City job.
Foxes manager Marti Cifuentes was sacked as manager after his side were defeated 2-1 at home to Matt Bloomfield’s U’s, a first win for the new Oxford boss.
With Leicester lying in 14th in the Championship table, TalkSport understands that Rowett is amongst the names being discussed as the club, who were in the Premier League just last season, look to stabilise their season.
The former Yellows head coach was dismissed by the club two days before Christmas after a 1-0 defeat to fellow strugglers Charlton Athletic.

After being appointed in December 2024, Rowett managed to keep Oxford in the Championship in their first season back in the second tier for 25 years, but had the club languishing in the relegation zone by the time of his sacking.
The 51-year-old has responded to the Leicester links, telling Sky Sports: “It’s a club I played for, it’s a fantastic football club.

“Obviously, they’re in a little bit of trouble at the moment with potentially a points deduction. There are links, I’m enjoying this seat, for now.”

Rowett played for the club between 2000 and 2002 in the Premier League.
The Foxes are expected to be hit with a points deduction in the coming weeks after breaching ‘Profit and Sustainability Rules’ limits during the 2023/24 season.
This could see them dragged into danger and at risk of back-to-back relegations, and are potentially looking at Rowett’s Championship experience to keep them afloat.
