“We are getting punished and it’s high time I say my mind”- Oxford United manager Matt Bloomfield drops bombshell as they were punished in a 3-1 defeat to Sheffield United
Matt Bloomfield was disappointed in his Oxford United team after they were punished in a 3-1 defeat to Sheffield United.
The U’s took an early lead at Bramall Lane, Myles Peart-Harris scoring his first goal for the club, before conceding three poor goals to allow the Blades to romp to victory.
Weak defending for all three goals left the Yellows boss downhearted.
“I thought we started really well as we did Saturday,” Bloomfield confessed.
“Got our noses in front, we were really disciplined in our shape.
“Really disappointed with all three goals tonight; second phase of a set piece. Tactically for the second goal, we were fine – I think Ciaron’s slipped or jammed his leg in the floor and obviously it’s led to [the goal].
“But we’ve come away to a massive football club with a fantastic team led by a top manager, and we’ve conceded three shots on target I believe and conceded three goals.
“On Saturday, we had three shots on target and conceded two goals. So, we’re getting punished at the moment for every shot, and that’s nothing against Jamie. Jamie’s not had a chance with any of them. We’ve actually been really disciplined.
“We’ve been out of possession but I think that’s natural when you come up against such a good team.
“But I’m really proud of the discipline the lads showed but we’re getting punished for every little thing at the moment and we have to believe in what we’re doing and keep moving forward.
“I feel really frustrated that we’ve conceded three goals in situations that we believe could have done better.”
Oxford came up against a well-resourced Blades side managed by former U’s boss Chris Wilder.

After facing another well-financed side in Birmingham City last weekend, losing 2-0 at the Kassam, Bloomfield acknowledges the clubs that the Yellows are up against
“We knew it was going to be a tough week coming into it. Birmingham, obviously, what did they spend, 13 million on the two subs and the boy from Brighton who was worth however much? That’s the money in our league. That’s what we’re up against every game, every game is a challenge.
“We’ll analyse what we’ve done well and what we need to improve on. We’ll debrief on that on Thursday and we’ll prepare ourselves for another away game on Saturday.”
Oxford travel to face league leaders Coventry City on Saturday to conclude a week in which Bloomfield’s men have failed to pick up any points out of any available six so far.
Sitting in 23rd in the Championship, it will be a tough task to end the week on a high.
