Ipswich Town didn’t have the busiest of winter transfer windows, but they made some smart signings regardless.
Ipswich Town did most of their recruitment work in the summer transfer window as they geared up for the 2025/26 campaign. And, after a slow start, ITFC are firmly in the automatic promotion race.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, it was a brief but very steady debut from Neil. He was introduced in place of Jack Taylor, partnering Azor Matusiwa.
As shown in his previous starring role at Sunderland, the Ipswich Town loan man was an assured presence in the middle, showing composure on the ball as they went on to score a winner and defeat the Rams.
Neil’s short debut was a sign of things to come. He was a crucial cog in Regis Le Bris’ promotion-winning side, both in terms of what he offered as a player and as a leader. He’s a calming player who leads by example on and off the pitch.
The high standards and promotion past he brings will be of real value to McKenna. ITFC are a club always looking to raise their levels, and even only on loan, Neil will do that as they battle for promotion.

Having starred in the Championship before and waited for his shot in the Premier League, there will have been a bit of frustration for Neil to find such limited action with Sunderland. Now back in the second tier though, the firm focus is on the task at hand.
Success with Ipswich Town will only put Neil in a better position for the summer. It has already been confirmed he’ll leave the Stadium of Light at the end of this season.
It means this loan serves as a big opportunity for Neil to put himself in the shop window. He hasn’t been short of admirers before and as a free agent, he won’t be in the summer either.
For now though, prioritising success with ITFC will set him up best for his next move. He can further prove to those keen that he’s a player above Championship calibre by edging out Jack Taylor and Jens Cajuste in the starting XI fight.
A key role in a promotion-winning McKenna side could even see him snapped up permanently for their Premier League return. There’s no shortage of motivation for Neil, and his solid debut indicates he knows exactly how valuable this stint can be.
