West Bromwich Albion’s push for survival suffered another setback on Saturday as they fell 2-1 to fellow Championship strugglers Oxford United.
The Baggies, who sacked boss Eric Ramsay on Tuesday following a 1-1 draw with Charlton, extended their winless run to 11 league games, with first-half goals from Stanley Mills and Will Lankshear proving decisive for the hosts.
Although West Brom pulled one back before the break, when substitute Oliver Bostock’s shot from the edge of the area was deflected into the net, it was another afternoon to forget for the managerless visitors.
With caretaker boss James Morrison unable to inspire, West Brom must act swiftly to appoint a new manager if they are to retain their Championship status next season.
West Brom Must Appoint Sean Dyche
West Brom have been linked with several potential candidates to take over until the end of the season following Ramsay’s sacking, but Sean Dyche is the one they should go all out to sign.
The 54-year-old is arguably the best option available for the Baggies in the current circumstances – not only is he free and available now, but he also has the experience and attributes required to save the club from the drop.
Dyche has proven on numerous occasions that he can rally a squad and deliver results instantly, although it remains to be seen whether he would be willing to join West Brom at this stage of the season.
The ‘incredible’ Kettering-born manager was sacked by Nottingham Forest on 12 February after just 114 days in charge and could choose not to manage again until the summer, when he would be able to start afresh at a new club.
Carlos Corberan Another Option for West Brom?
While West Brom reportedly view Dyche as their top candidate to take over until the summer, the Baggies could also turn to former head coach Carlos Corberan.
According to reports, the Spaniard is considering a return to West Brom amid growing uncertainty over his future at Valencia, who are also facing serious relegation concerns.
Corberan’s position at Mestalla is in doubt, and it has not been ruled out that he could return to the Hawthorns to help West Brom avoid the drop in the coming weeks.
Winless in their last 11 league games, West Brom next visit Sheffield United on Saturday, March 7.
