Jorginho lifts lid on Arsenal dressing room reaction to his mistake for Tottenham equaliser

Jorginho gave the ball away to James Maddison in the build-up to Tottenham’s second equaliser in the North London Derby, costing Arsenal a win over their fierce rivals

Jorginho has insisted he has received the full backing of his team-mates after his “painful mistake” in Arsenal’s draw with Tottenham.

The midfielder had come on at half-time for the injured Declan Rice, taking up a position at the base of the Gunners’ midfield. At that time, the score was level following Cristian Romero’s own-goal and Son Heung-Min’s clever finish

The hosts were back ahead nine minutes into the second period when Bukayo Saka scored a penalty after Romero was adjudged to have handled the ball. But Spurs were level again virtually from the kick-off after Jorginho gave the ball away to James Maddison.

Maddison then played it through to Son, who placed his shot past Gunners keeper David Raya. It was a pivotal moment and one that would cost the hosts a famous win over their fierce rivals.

But Jorginho, who joined from Chelsea in the January transfer window, has now revealed that his team-mates remain fully behind him. And he insisted that their backing has given him added motivation.

“A painful mistake today, but seeing how everyone reacted after my mistake to support and lift me up, my teammates, coaches, staff and you Arsenal fans,” he wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of himself shouting in frustration after the equaliser.

It gives me even more motivation to work harder and harder, because all of you deserve the best version of myself. Thank you so much for the support Arsenal family.”

His team-mates backed him publicly as well, with Rice and captain Martin Odegaard replying to his post with love hearts. Fullback Oleksandr Zinchenko was also keen to show his support for the Italian, writing “what a player”.

And while boss Mikel Arteta was left disappointed with his side for throwing away two leads, he threw his backing behind Jorginho. The Spaniard insisted that his mistake was simply “part of football”.

“I love him, and we love him. We all love him. That is a part of football, and they are allowed to make errors because they play. We don’t play and for us it’s really easy, but if there is someone who is there that will help the team and do the most, it’s him,” Arteta said.

“He’s got it, and for Jorgi, we’re all with him. We are very disappointed not to win the three points that’s for sure, especially when you go twice in front in the game and you have the opportunity win it, and especially the moment we conceded the goals.
