Manchester City have been handed a £210,000 fine by the Premier League for breaching competition rules during their dominant 6-0 victory over Ipswich Town at Portman Road earlier this year.
The punishment stems from a violation of Premier League rule L.33, which specifically governs the timely conduct of kick-offs and restarts during matches. According to league officials, City delayed the second-half restart by two minutes and 22 seconds, despite holding a commanding 3-0 lead at half-time.
The match, which took place on January 19, saw Pep Guardiola’s men assert their dominance early on, with two goals from Phil Foden and another from Mateo Kovačić putting the game out of reach by the break. However, it was not just the goals that drew the league’s attention — the delay in restarting the match raised concerns and ultimately contributed to the club’s growing list of rule breaches.
The fine issued for the Portman Road incident is part of a broader disciplinary trend. Manchester City were already fined over £2 million in 2024 for 22 separate breaches of the same rule across the past two seasons. The January delay marked the eighth such incident in the 2024/25 campaign alone, with the club now accepting and apologising for nine more breaches of rule L.33 in total this season.
Because penalties for repeat offenses are scaled up incrementally, City’s total in fines related to late kick-offs now exceeds £1.03 million. The Premier League clarified that such measures are not just about discipline, but also about maintaining the standards and integrity of the competition.
In an official statement, the Premier League explained the reasoning behind these rules and the fines:
> “Rules relating to kick-offs and restarts help ensure the organisation of the competition is set at the highest possible professional standard and provides certainty to fans and participating clubs.
It also ensures the broadcast of every Premier League match is kept to schedule.”
The repeated infractions have raised eyebrows, especially given the level of professionalism expected from one of Europe’s elite clubs. While Manchester City have acknowledged the rule breaches and agreed to the punishments, questions remain about whether this trend will continue — and what further consequences might arise if the delays persist.
Despite their success on the pitch, Guardiola’s side now faces scrutiny for their timekeeping off it, and will be under pressure to clean up their act in the coming months.
