Oxford United have been interested in landing the League One this month before the end of the January transfer window.
Oxford United have dropped their pursuit of Reading midfielder Charlie Savage, according to the Reading Chronicle.
Oxford United have been keen on landing the League One man this winter. OUFC have until the end of the January transfer window to bring in some more new faces as they aim to stay up in the second tier.
Savage, 22, has been a key player for Reading over recent times and is under contract until the summer of 2027 meaning they are under no immediate pressure to sell him. He has made 28 appearances in all competitions to date this season, 25 of which have come in the league, and he has chipped in with two goals and one assist.
In this latest update regarding his future this month, Reading Chronicle claim the U’s have now dropped their interest and won’t be making a fresh bid at this stage. The Royals are said to want £1.5million for his signature which has priced Matt Bloomfield‘s side out of a move.
Oxford United are in the relegation zone in the Championship along with Sheffield Wednesday and Portsmouth after 27 fixtures following their 0-0 draw with QPR last time out on Tuesday night. They are now four points from safety behind Blackburn Rovers in 21st.

Oxford United could have seen Savage as someone to bolster their midfield department. If he had joined OUFC, he would have given them more competition and depth in the middle of the park.
He could have battled it out with the likes of Cameron Brannagan, Will Vaulks, Brian De Keersmaecker and Jamie McDonnell for a place in Bloomfield’s starting XI. The latter has recently arrived at the Kassam Stadium from Nottingham Forest following a loan at Mansfield Town.
Savage, who is a Wales international with two caps to his name, joined Reading back in 2023. He has since played 124 games for the Royals and has found the net on 14 occasions.
The Leicester-born man rose up through the academy at Manchester United and was a regular at various different youth levels before playing once for their first-team. He was also loaned out away by the Red Devils to Forest Green Rovers to get some experience under his belt.
What now for Oxford United after Charlie Savage decision?
Oxford United have until the deadline on Monday 2nd February to complete any final deals. OUFC boss Bloomfield will be eager to put his own stamp on his newly inherited squad.
He has recently been picked as their replacement for Gary Rowett, who was sacked after a poor run of form. The 41-year-old has managed Colchester United, Wycombe Wanderers and Luton Town in the past.
The U’s are back in action this weekend. They face an away trip to the King Power Stadium to play Leicester City.
