A teenager who died after collapsing during a football match in Oxford has been pictured for the first time.
Oxford United held a one minute’s silence for their academy goalkeeper, Amelia Aplin, 15, who passed away during the match at the club’s training centre in Horspath at the weekend.
Emergency services were called to the sports park – she was taken to hospital, but couldn’t be saved.
The silence was held at the Kassam Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Players and coaching staff from both sides wore black armbands as a mark of respect for the talented young goalkeeper.
Amelia, a key member of the Girls’ Academy, suffered a “serious medical incident” while playing against Fulham at the club’s Horspath training centre last Saturday, March 7.
Speaking ahead of the fixture, Oxford United Head Coach Matt Bloomfield spoke of the heavy atmosphere at the club.
“My heart is broken for her parents,” he said. “It’s been very sombre here and we have to make sure that we give Amelia’s friends and family all the love they need going through this terrible time.”
The Junior Premier League described Amelia as a “bright light” and a “leader”.
