According to reports, Mykhaylo Mudryk, who was lost to Chelsea in the 2023 winter transfer window, was “devastated” when Arsenal failed to sign him.

Arsenal and Chelsea fought to sign Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk, but he eventually went to Stamford Bridge for an initial fee of around £62 million.

The Ukrainian international had flirted with the Gunners in the weeks leading up to the January 2023 transfer deadline and a move to the Emirates was the most likely outcome before Chelsea took over the deal.

Mikel Arteta’s team got away with Mudryk, as alternative target Leandro Trossard has performed superbly since moving to Arsenal last year.

Mudryk has struggled to stay at Chelsea, scoring just three goals in 34 Premier League games. He was linked with a shock move to Bayern Munich last month, but Arsenal and Juventus have been described as “prime candidates” to sign the winger if he leaves the Blues.

The Athletic report claims that Mudryk “made no secret of his preferred destination” during last year’s transfer saga and that he was “devastated” when his move to Arsenal fell through.

On Arsenal’s confidence in Mudryk, the report adds: “Technical director Edu and Arteta were fully convinced of Mudryk’s talent. They believed he could offer them a third midfielder to complement Gabriel Martinelli and Bukaya Sak.

“Mudryk still has fans at Arsenal who believe that his bold talent can still be discovered. The question is whether that will ever happen in the Premier League, but when it comes to joining Arsenal, that ship seems to have sailed.

Former Arsenal star Paul Merson has hit out at Chelsea’s players because “many of them are not good enough” to play for a Premier League club.

“Many players are not good enough to play for Chelsea Football Club, but they have eight-year contracts,” Merson wrote in his column for Sky Sports.
“It’s not long since Chelsea won the Champions League. People talk about the club’s success as if it were 20 years ago. They won the Champions League three years ago, but the club still demands patience from its fans. It is simply not good enough.

“Chelsea’s biggest problem is that Pochettino came to a club that has spent a lot of money to bring in a lot of players on eight-year contracts.

“Those who bought these players: what were you thinking? We need to know, but I’ve never heard any of them give an interview. All I hear is that Mauricio Pochettino has to justify it, but he never bought these players. He has just got the job as manager and he has to deal with the situation he is in.

Now they are stuck and because of the problems they have, it looks like they will have to sell one of their best players, Conor Gallagher, to get out of the problems. He has come up through the ranks, he is a home grown player and a member of the club, but he will give them a win in terms of the rules of profit and sustainability. It is shocking.
