Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has called for calm and perspective after sections of the home crowd voiced their frustration during and after a disappointing 2–1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur—a side currently battling near the lower end of the table.
Villa were second best for much of the contest, with Spurs asserting themselves early on. Conor Gallagher opened the scoring with a well-taken effort, before Richarlison doubled the advantage inside 25 minutes, leaving the hosts chasing the game far earlier than expected. Despite late pressure, Villa could only muster a consolation through Emi Buendía deep into stoppage time.
The result marks Villa’s third consecutive defeat—a slump they have not experienced since November 2024—and one that has clearly unsettled supporters who have grown accustomed to higher standards under Emery’s leadership.
Addressing the reaction from the stands, Emery remained composed but firm in his message: “I’ve been here for over three years, and I haven’t forgotten everything we’ve achieved. We spoke at half-time about our progress as a team. Of course, we can perform better than we did today, but I’m not going to lose my direction or suddenly change everything. Sometimes you lose because the opponent is simply better—and today, Tottenham deserved it.”
He continued by acknowledging Spurs’ clinical start and control of the match: “They played a fantastic game. Scoring two early goals allowed them to dictate the tempo, and that made things very difficult for us. We tried to respond, especially in the second half, and while the reaction was better, it still wasn’t enough. That said, the spirit we showed later on is something we must build on.”
Despite the disappointment, Emery was quick to shift focus toward the challenges ahead, particularly in Europe: “Now our attention turns to the Europa League semi-final second leg. It’s a completely different game, a different opponent, and a new opportunity. We have to prepare properly and give everything.”
