Arsenal defender Ben White involved in ‘angry exchange’ during last England stint

Arsenal defender Ben White reportedly got into an “angry exchange” with England assistant manager Steve Holland during his final spell with the national team.

England manager Gareth Southgate revealed on Thursday that White had made it clear he was not available for selection for the national team, while Arsenal’s sporting director Edu informed England technical director John McDermott of the 26-year-old’s decision.

White has yet to give a reason for his withdrawal from the squad and Southgate claims he does not know why the defender does not want to be in the squad for England’s summer campaign at Euro 2024.

According to The Athletic, White and Holland had an “angry exchange” in front of other English players during the World Cup campaign in Qatar, as Holland felt White ignored information he had given him about the opponents’ tactics and training data.

The report adds that Holland also highlighted the fact that White admitted that he was no more interested in football than in his own career.

“When I sit down and watch a 90-minute game after I’ve trained all day and had four or five meetings about football, the last thing I want to do is watch more football,” White said in November 2022.

There is no indication that White’s talks with Holland led to his decision to leave the England camp during the tournament.

Southgate was also keen to emphasize at Thursday’s press conference that Holland has no problem with White.

“He obviously plays very well and has done so for a long time,” Southgate said of White.

“But he’s not the first player who at certain times has not wanted to be available for selection. I’ve always tried to protect those players because I wanted to keep the door open, although a lot of times I’m the one who takes the hit for not picking them and people don’t know why.

“There is no problem between us and there has never been a problem with Steve Holland. It’s been mentioned in articles and I don’t like it.

“People can say things about me and I have to accept that untrue things are said about me. In this role, for whatever reason, you have to put up with it.

“But I’m not prepared for that to happen to a key member of my coaching team. That is not the reason why Ben is not available for selection.
