Birmingham City transfer news with a midfielder, linked with Blues, also interesting fellow promoted outfit Wrexham this summer
Wrexham, like Birmingham City promoted to the Championship at the end of last season, have reportedly joined the race to sign midfielder Lewis O’Brien – a player who has also been linked previously with a move to Blues.
O’Brien joined Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2022 after they’d defeated the midfielder’s Huddersfield Town side in the Championship play-off final, but O’Brien struggled to make an impact in the Premier League and has instead been routinely loaned out in the three years since.
The midfielder has spent time at DC United and LAFC in the MLS, while closer to home he’s also been with Middlesbrough and, last season, Swansea City. There are a host of second tier clubs this summer reportedly interested in the player, who only has a year remaining on his contract at the City Ground and no prospects of playing for Nuno.
O’Brien is understood to be wanted by Hull City and Southampton, while Blues – building on their record-breaking promotion last season to ensure they hit the ground running back in the Championship – were also credited with an interest earlier this summer, although they’re also after Tommy Doyle of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Forest, who supposedly want as much as £8m to finally part with O’Brien on a permanent basis, could also entertain interest from Wrexham, reports Alan Nixon on his Patreon account; the Red Dragons are operating in the Championship for the first time since they were relegated from the old Second Division in 1982.
They’ve already signed Ryan Hardie from relegated Plymouth Argyle for around £700,000 and have been linked with the likes of Fulham midfielder Tom Cairney, Stuart Armstrong, Craig Dawson and Everton defender Michael Keane.
