Eddie Howe has downplayed suggestions that Bruno Guimaraes “waved goodbye” to Newcastle United fans after their win over Brentford. Guimaraes, who is wanted by Arsenal and Manchester City, played a starring role in the 4-2 victory, providing two assists and scoring a late goal.

At the end of the match, the Brazilian midfielder was seen waving and gesturing to the Newcastle supporters, and appeared a bit emotional. Guimaraes has a £100 million release clause in his contract that can be triggered next month, and both Manchester City and Arsenal are reportedly considering making a move.

However, Howe has encouraged fans not to read too much into Guimaraes’ gesture and is hopeful the player will remain at Newcastle next season. Howe stated that Guimaraes is “integral” to what the club is doing and is an “inspirational player” that they are desperate to keep.

Striker Alexander Isak has also been linked with a potential move away, but Howe praised both Guimaraes and Isak as “outstanding players” who have made a big difference for Newcastle this season.

‘Three points, two assists and one goal. Thank you for the support today and we hope it’s enough for us to be in Europe next season! Howay the lads.’

Guimaraes even had time to dig out talkSPORT pundits Danny Murphy and Simon Jordan, who had claimed in February that he was not athletic enough to be ‘one of the best’ in the league.

Guimaraes himself seemed to be looking ahead to next season, posting on Instagram about the team’s hopes of securing European football. He also took the opportunity to respond to previous criticism from pundits Danny Murphy and Simon Jordan about his athleticism, posting a graphic showing he had covered the most distance of any Premier League player this season.
